Productivity Engineering and AI Integration

Arm
Cambridge, UK

Summary

I spent six months at Arm working on AI and engineering tools used by teams across the company. Most of my work focused on building an evaluation platform for AI systems, covering everything from system design and coding to testing, debugging and supporting users. In addition to evals, I also gota cahnce to work on kernel optimisation and machine learning for verification. The placement gave me a good mix of software engineering, AI and lower-level performance work, while also giving me real ownership of projects and the chance to work with experienced engineers across Arm.

Role and Contributions

My main role was developing an internal evaluation platform for AI-assisted engineering systems at Arm. I worked across design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation and onboarding, with the platform now supporting multiple engineering teams. I also contributed to related work in kernel optimisation and machine learning for verification. Alongside the technical work, I collaborated with engineers across Arm, gathered requirements, supported users and helped turn early ideas into tools that could be used in practice.

Technical Skills

I used and developed skills in Python, C#, software architecture, testing, debugging and API design while building AI evaluation tooling. I also worked with metrics for quality, reliability, latency and token usage, and gained experience with distributed execution and observability. Beyond this, I had some exposure to kernel optimisation (focusing on C/C++ and assembly + internal tools) and machine learning for verification (also python), which helped me better understand performance-focused and hardware-related engineering.

Professional Skills

I developed strong communication, teamwork and project ownership skills throughout the placement. I regularly worked with engineers across different teams, gathered requirements, explained technical decisions and supported users adopting new tools. I also became more confident working with uncertain problems, prioritising tasks, asking better questions and raising risks early. Working across teams and time zones also improved my ability to communicate clearly and keep others aligned.
